The Solar Project

The Missionaries of Charity, founded by Mother Teresa of Calcutta in 1950, have over 750 homes around the world. They have one objective, which is "to love and serve the poorest of the poor, both materially and spiritually, not only in the slums, but also all over the world wherever they may be." The Missionaries of Charity in the township of Khayelitsha in Cape Town is no different. It serves a population of about 70 severely cognitive and physically impaired individuals who have lived on the margins of society, with either families unable or unwilling to care for them.

The Sisters who provide 24/7 care at the residential home face daily challenges providing the necessities required to feed, clothe, and support those in their care. An added difficulty has been navigating the high cost of electricity and frequent power outages. In early 2026, a very generous donor allowed us to fund a solar power project at the Missionaries of Charity home. This all-in-one integrated system combines inverter, battery, and energy management system and will reduce electricity costs, optimize solar generation and usage, and provide reliable backup power during power outages.

Blue Sky Energy, the company who took on this project, has been incredibly dedicated to solving the various challenges that have arisen while installing the solar roof panels. They continue to gather inverter data to optimize performance, separate buildings into essential and non-essential loads, and find ways to restructure the project in ways to maximize the benefits to the Missionaries of Charity. We are so grateful for Blue Sky's hard work and commitment  and for the generosity of such donors who make these life changing projects possible.
