First Full Day in Cape Town

We had a busy and beautiful first day in Cape Town. It started off with a short service at the Botanical Gardens to ground and open ourselves to this incredible experience. Gathering on the grass surrounded by peaceful scenery with a backdrop of Table Mountain gave us time to pray, reflect, and prepare our hearts to be fully present for the journey ahead.

We spent half of the day in the black township of Guguethu, the place where much of AIAIA’s work was initiated 26 years ago. Our first stop was JL Zwane Church where community leaders welcomed us with song, dance, and praise. They reflected on the history with AIAIA, and it was a joy to hear the scope of our positive impact over the years. We shared a lovely meal while building on friendships both old and new.

After lunch, we returned to Ikhaya Loxolo, a long term care facility that has become an annual event and saw both new and familiar faces. We enjoyed conversations with many elders and staff while providing a little pampering hand and shoulder massages. It is always wonderful watching faces light up with the small gift of a colorful new scarf or hat, as is seeing the delegates and residents laughing and sharing beautiful moments together.

We ended our day visiting Tembalethu, a school which means “Our Hope” and serves students who have a wide range of physical disabilities. We were inspired by the vision of Joy, a young woman with an inspirational vision and the determination to change not only students’ lives but future generations. Joy and other school and community leaders are working toward creating a large garden, one that would not only provide fresh produce, but also education on healthy eating, gardening activities as a means of healing, and opportunities to increase food security.

The delegation is so grateful for our safe arrival and really appreciates your ongoing thoughts and prayers during our journey. Your commitment and support mean so much!
