Meaningful Connections

Today was filled with heartfelt connections, music, laughter, and joyful play with some of our senior cousins in Gugulethu and some of our youngest at Tender Loving Care Orphanage in the township of Barcelona. Time was shared dancing, singing, praying, listening, conversing, and savoring the gift of presence.

For many years, AIAIA has brought elders in Gugulethu together to socialize, share a meal, and decrease the isolation that often accompanies aging. Our time today was filled with youth drumming, singing and dancing, and even a little chair yoga. Delegates provided hand and shoulder massages which always bring smiles and a deeper human connection. We were also honored to to serve the group a traditional lunch while they sat enjoying time with friends.

After lunch, we were invited into several families’ homes in Gugulethu; this experience every year is a highlight as it gives a true glimpse into the lived experience some have in the townships as the opportunity to hear stories about life during Apartheid, and the many challenges, triumphs, and accomplishments since that time.

For decades, Tender Loving Care Orphanage has been taking in children abandoned and lovingly raising them. They presently have 30 children ranging in age from 3 to 23. AIAIA assists with supplying them with food and other supplies, and this year, we also brought several bags of clothing, sports equipment, toys, games, puzzles, and art supplies. Our gathering today was spent teaching the Hokey Pokey, playing Duck Duck Goose, and learning about the renovations of the girls’ living area.

As our fourth day ended, we were overcome with gratitude for being welcomed so affectionately into people’s lives. Deeply connecting with others is truly one of the most precious gifts of being in South Africa; arms and hearts always open wide and eager to embrace and make us feel as if we’ve known each other for ages.

We thank you for your continued support of our journey here--and the community elders and recipients of your generous donations wanted to make sure we sent their deep appreciation.
