During the last delegation trip in 2019, AIAIA brought its first suitcase full of reusable menstrual kits to the rural community of Malungeni. Ever since, we’ve been exploring opportunities and partnerships to expand our work with Days for Girls (DfG), the international organization that partners around the globe to promote menstrual equity by decreasing shame, and providing reusable supplies, as well as education around menstrual and reproductive health.

We are very excited to have recently teamed up with two experienced and inspirational women who work tirelessly to remove barriers and provide quality education and opportunities to youth in South Africa.

Lou Billet, the founder of African Angels in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, runs a primary school and community center, and has established one of the newest DfG Enterprises in the world. We feel blessed to have had the opportunity to fund their most recent and largest DfG distribution yet this month at the Isolomzi High School, located two hours from East London. 250 girls received a kit that can last up to three years, and these girls in addition to 200 young men were provided education around menstrual and reproductive health. By supporting African Angels, AIAIA is not only supporting the health and future of youth in South Africa, but also helping provide job opportunities and generate income for women who are involved in the cutting, sewing, educating, and distributing of the DfG kits.

Leona Scheepers, is the co-leader of the Kempton Park DfG Enterprise outside of Johannesburg. She is also a long-time affiliate of the Cuddle Trust, an organization promoting educational opportunities as a way to combat poverty and create positive community change. Our recent donation will provide education and reusable menstrual kits to 150 girls in the Western Cape, as well as purchase two new sewing machines, fabric, and other necessary sewing and educational materials. The newly purchased machines and supplies will further Leona’s efforts to develop and train two new sewing pods, which are small groups of women who will be instrumental in the creation, education, and distribution of their products.

We are honored and grateful to be able to support the meaningful work of these extraordinary women and their mission to improve lives.
